The short version
- Kanso Dot has no accounts, ads, analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. We don’t sell or share your personal data.
- The clock, date, analog, battery and now-playing widgets work entirely on your phone. Nothing from them is sent anywhere.
- The weather widget sends a location rounded to about 1 km (a city you picked, or your approximate location if you turn that on) to our weather service to get a forecast. We don’t store or log it with anything that identifies you.
- Forecasts come from MET Norway. Payments are handled by Google Play.
1. Who we are
Kanso (“we”, “us”) is an independent studio that makes home-screen widget apps for Android, starting with Kanso Dot. This policy explains what data Kanso Dot and kanso.ink handle and why. Questions or requests: support@kanso.ink.
When we release more Kanso apps, each one gets its own section here.
2. What we don’t collect
Kanso Dot doesn’t ask you to create an account, and it contains no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or tracking code. It doesn’t use your advertising ID, and it doesn’t access your contacts, photos, files, microphone or camera. We don’t sell personal data, and we don’t share it for advertising.
3. Kanso Dot, feature by feature
Clock, date and analog clock
These widgets are drawn on your phone from its own time, date and time zone. Nothing leaves your phone.
Battery
The battery widget reads your charge level and charging state from Android, on your phone. Nothing leaves your phone.
Weather
To show a forecast, Kanso Dot has to send a location to our weather service. You choose which:
- A city from the built-in list. The list is part of the app, so searching it happens on your phone. Kanso Dot sends that city’s coordinates, rounded as described below.
- Your approximate location (optional). If you turn on “Use my location”, Kanso Dot first explains what will happen, then asks Android for approximate location (never precise location). It reads your location only while you’re using the app, for example when you open it or tap the weather widget, and never in the background.
What’s sent. Before anything leaves your phone, the coordinates are rounded to two decimal places, a grid of roughly 1 km. The request goes over an encrypted HTTPS connection to Kanso’s weather service at api.kanso.ink. It contains those rounded coordinates, your app language, a short app-version tag (such as “dot/1”) and the standard technical headers any app sends. It contains no name, account, device ID or advertising ID. Like every internet connection, it also carries your IP address. So the widget can refresh later, the app keeps the last rounded location on your phone and reuses it until it next reads your location or you change the setting.
How our service uses it. Our weather service uses the rounded coordinates only to fetch and return your forecast. It doesn’t store them with any identifier, and it doesn’t keep request logs. MET Norway’s terms require us not to ask for the same forecast again and again, so the service keeps a copy of each forecast for a short time, filed only under the rounded grid point and not linked to anyone who asked. These copies expire within hours.
Cloudflare. Our weather service runs on Cloudflare Workers. Like any network provider, Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic connection data to deliver requests and protect the service from abuse, under the Cloudflare privacy policy. Our own code uses your IP address only in memory, for about a minute, to limit how many requests one connection can make. We don’t log or store it.
MET Norway. Forecasts come from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway). When our service doesn’t already have a current forecast for your grid point, it requests one from MET Norway with just the rounded coordinates. That request comes from Cloudflare’s network, not from your phone. However, Cloudflare may add your IP address to it as a technical header, so MET Norway may receive your IP address too. MET Norway says it keeps its server logs in Oslo, Norway (see its terms of service). Weather data is from MET Norway, licensed under CC BY 4.0 and NLOD 2.0, and Kanso Dot credits it as “Weather data from MET Norway”.
If you don’t want to share your own location, pick a city instead. If you don’t want any location sent, don’t add a weather widget. Everything else works without it.
Now playing (media)
The now-playing widget shows the title, artist, artwork and playback state of what’s playing, and lets you play, pause and skip. Android only lets an app do this if you give it notification access, which you turn on in Android’s settings after Kanso Dot explains why.
Kanso Dot uses this access only to connect to media sessions, the playback controls that music, podcast and video apps publish. All of it happens on your phone. Kanso Dot doesn’t send, upload or share any of this information, and it doesn’t read, store or act on the content of your other notifications. So the widget can show the current track, the app may keep the latest track details and artwork in its private storage on your phone.
You can turn notification access off at any time. The now-playing widget then stops updating, and everything else keeps working.
Purchases
Kanso Dot is a paid app sold through Google Play. Google handles the payment under its own terms and privacy policy, and we never see your card or payment details. Through Google Play Console, Google gives us limited order information (for example an order number, date, price and country), which we use only for refunds, support, tax and accounting.
Crash and performance reports
Kanso Dot contains no crash-reporting SDK. If you’ve allowed your phone to share usage and diagnostics data with Google, Google Play may give us crash and performance reports about the app (“Android vitals”). These come from Google under Google’s privacy policy and don’t identify you to us.
Data stored on your phone
Your widget settings (styles, colours, the city you picked or the last rounded location) and the latest weather and track details are stored in the app’s private storage on your phone. If Android backup is on, Android may back up the app’s data to your Google account, where Google encrypts it. That backup is handled by Google, and we can’t access it. Removing a widget deletes its settings. Clearing the app’s storage or uninstalling it deletes everything.
4. This website
kanso.ink is a static website. It uses no cookies, analytics, advertising, third-party scripts or third-party fonts. Our hosting provider processes your IP address and standard request details (such as the page requested and your browser type) to deliver pages and protect against abuse, and may keep short-lived security logs under its own privacy policy. Links to other sites, such as Google Play, are covered by those sites’ policies.
5. Support emails
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you put in your message. We use them only to reply and help you. We keep support emails only as long as we need them to help you and keep basic records, and we delete them sooner if you ask. Please don’t send passwords or sensitive personal information.
6. Who else is involved
We don’t sell your personal data or share it for advertising. The only other parties involved are:
- Cloudflare, which runs our weather service and may host this website, as our service provider.
- MET Norway, which provides forecasts for rounded coordinates, as described in Weather.
- Google, which distributes Kanso Dot and handles payments through Google Play.
We would disclose information only if the law required it, and we keep very little to disclose.
7. How long data is kept
| Data | Where | Kept for |
|---|---|---|
| Rounded coordinates in a weather request | Our weather service | Only in memory while the request is handled |
| Cached forecast for a grid point | Cloudflare’s cache | Until it expires, normally within hours. Not linked to anyone |
| IP address, for rate limiting | Memory on Cloudflare’s servers | About a minute |
| Connection data handled by Cloudflare | Cloudflare | As set out in Cloudflare’s privacy policy |
| Forecast requests received by MET Norway | MET Norway | As set out in MET Norway’s terms |
| Widget settings, latest forecast and track details | Your phone | Until you remove the widget, clear the app’s storage or uninstall |
| Support emails | Our mailbox | As long as needed to help you; deleted on request |
| Order information from Google | Google Play Console | As long as tax and accounting law requires |
To ask us to delete anything we hold about you, email support@kanso.ink. For the app, there’s normally nothing to delete, because we don’t keep weather requests.
8. Security
All of Kanso Dot’s network traffic uses HTTPS (TLS), and the app contains no secret keys. Our main protection is collecting as little as possible: our weather service keeps no request logs that could leak. We protect the accounts that run our services with strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication.
9. Your choices and rights
- Location: pick a city instead, turn off “Use my location” in the weather widget’s settings, or remove the permission in Android Settings › Apps › Kanso Dot › Permissions › Location.
- Notification access: turn it off in Android Settings under Notifications or Special app access › Notification access. The exact menu names vary by phone.
- Data on your phone: remove widgets, clear the app’s storage (Settings › Apps › Kanso Dot › Storage) or uninstall the app.
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU, EEA and UK, or US state privacy laws such as California’s), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or move your personal data, to object to or restrict how it’s used, and to withdraw consent. You can also complain to your data protection authority. We don’t keep personal data from the app, so there’s usually nothing to access or delete, but email support@kanso.ink and we’ll reply within one month.
10. Legal bases and international transfers
For people in the EU, EEA and UK, we rely on these legal bases:
- Forecasts for your location: your consent, given in the app and through Android’s permission prompt. You can withdraw it at any time, as described above.
- Forecasts for a city you picked: providing the feature you asked for.
- Rate limiting and abuse protection: our legitimate interest in keeping the service available.
- Support emails: replying to you, which is in your interest and ours.
- Order records: our legal obligations for tax and accounting.
Cloudflare runs a global network, so a weather request may be handled in a data centre outside your country. Cloudflare says it uses recognised legal safeguards for international transfers. MET Norway is based in Norway, which is in the EEA.
11. Children
Kanso Dot is a general-audience utility and isn’t directed at children. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from children under 13, or under the minimum age where they live. If you believe a child has emailed us personal information, tell us and we’ll delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update the effective date at the top. If a change affects what Kanso Dot sends off your phone, we’ll explain it in the app or its release notes before the change takes effect.
